If you have started reading The Series of Silence, you will know that the weather is rarely kind to the Overaugh family. The rain hammers against the single-pane glass of Moorside House. The mist clings to the canal paths in Altham. The cold seems to seep right through the stone walls and settle in your bones.
That atmosphere isn’t an accident. You can’t fake a Lancashire winter.
For the team at Moguhl, place is everything. It isn’t just about having a map or dropping in a few local place names like Blackburn or Preston. It is about identity. We are Lancastrians through and through. The rhythm of the speech, the specific shade of grey in the sky, the industrial grit that sits alongside the beautiful, wild countryside. That is who we are.
When we set out to create Moorside House: The Series of Silence, we made a promise. We weren’t just going to write about Lancashire. We were going to make sure everything we did was rooted here.
More Than Just a Backdrop
Moorside House itself is based on the architecture and history of the region. When we write about the mills, the canals, and the Victorian history of the Becker family in the 1880s, we are pulling from the real heritage that surrounds us.
It gives the story a weight it wouldn’t otherwise have. When Moxy and Skeggs are shivering in their tents by the railway embankment, that scene comes from a reality we know. When Seth drives down the M65, or when Natalia navigates the back streets near Audley, those are real miles travelled. We wanted the setting to feel as solid and unyielding as the house itself.
But our commitment goes deeper than the narrative.
KEEPING IT LOCAL
Writing a book series that spans ten novels is a massive undertaking. It involves design, editing, promotion, and logistics. In the publishing world, it is very easy to send that work away to London or overseas. It is easy to chase the cheapest option or the biggest agency.
We Didn’t Want That
Creating a local industry was vital to us. We were determined to ensure that everything was sourced and created right here in the county. If there is work to be done, we want a Lancastrian doing it. If there is a business to partner with, we look on our doorstep first.
Why? Because this region made us. The people and businesses of Lancashire deserve to benefit from everything we do. We believe in the talent that exists here. We believe in the work ethic. There is a no-nonsense, resilient quality to the people in this part of the world. It is the same resilience you see in Seth and Natalia Overaugh as they try to hold their family together against impossible odds.
A Local Legacy
We want The Series of Silence to be a success story not just for us, but for the community. We want to prove that you don’t need to be in a capital city to build a world-class saga. You can do it from right here, with the rain lashing against the window and a proper cup of tea on the desk.
Moorside House might be portrayed as a place of secrets, ghosts, and danger in our fiction. But in reality, the project is built on local pride. We are building something that belongs to Lancashire, created by people who love it.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for supporting local.
